Biology and Paleontology Short Course

The University of Texas High-Resolution X-ray CT Facility (UTCT) will host a short course on the fundamentals of acquisition, visualization, analysis, and mobilization of high-resolution X-ray CT (HRXCT) data of biological and paleontological specimens June 24-26, 2024.

This course will present an overview of the acquisition and interpretation of HRXCT data, followed by hands-on training in the 3D visualization and analysis of these data using ImageJ, 3D Slicer/SlicerMorph, and Dragonfly. Participants will also receive an orientation to navigating and uploading data to MorphoSource.

This course is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and funds are available to help cover the cost of travel, lodging, and meals. There is no charge to attend. Because space is limited, we will not be able to accommodate all applicants. Preference will be given to applicants who are consumers of oVert and/or MorphoSource data.

Geology Short Course

The University of Texas High-Resolution X-ray CT Facility will host its annual short course on the acquisition, visualization, and analysis of X-ray CT (XCT) data of geological samples July 10-12, 2024 in Austin, TX. This course presents an overview of the acquisition and interpretation of XCT data, followed by hands-on training in 3D visualization and quantitative analysis of discrete geological features (e.g., clasts, grains, fractures, pores, chondrules) and fabrics, using DragonflyImageJBlob3D, and Quant3D (the latter two programs developed at UTCT). 

This course is sponsored in part by NSF and funds are available to help cover the cost of lodging and meals. There is no charge to attend. Due to high interest in the course we will not be able to accept all applicants. Preference will be given to applicants who have or will have XCT data and have a demonstrated need for immediate application of the skills learned. Students and early career researchers receive priority. Participants are invited to bring their own XCT data, or to have specimens scanned (at a significant discount) at UTCT prior to the course.
