Short Courses 2019

The University of Texas High-Resolution X-ray CT Facility (UTCT) is hosting two short courses on the fundamentals of acquisition, visualization, and analysis of high-resolution X-ray CT (HRXCT) data this June. The first course, to be held June 5-7, will focus on HRXCT applications for biological and paleontological samples. The second course, to be held June 26-28, will focus on HRXCT applications for geological samples.

Both short courses will present an overview of the acquisition and interpretation of HRXCT data, followed by hands-on training in the 3D visualization and analysis of these data. The bio/paleo short course will delve more deeply into 3D visualization, surface extraction, and segmentation (e.g., endocasts, digital dissection). The geological short course will incorporate training in 3D quantitative analysis of discrete geological features (e.g., lithic clasts, mineral grains, porphyroblasts, chondrules, pores) and fabrics using freeware developed at UTCT (http://www.ctlab.geo.utexas.edu/software/).

These courses are sponsored in part by the National Science Foundation and funds may be available to help cover the cost of lodging and meals. There is no charge to attend. Because space is limited, we will not be able to accommodate all applicants. Preference will be given to applicants who possess or are in the process of acquiring HRXCT data and have a demonstrated need for immediate application of the skills learned. Students will receive first priority. Participants are invited to bring their own HRXCT data, or to have specimens scanned (at a significant discount) at UTCT prior to the short course.

To apply for either course please email an application statement (limit of ~300 words) no later than Friday, April 12th that briefly outlines:

1) Relevant biographical information (including your academic affiliations and your status as student or faculty/staff);
2) The type of sample(s) that you wish to analyze and your research objectives;
3) Financial need, if any; and
4) Whether you will have HRXCT data available for use in the workshop

Please email applications for the bio/paleo course (June 5-7) to Dr. Jessie Maisano (maisano@jsg.utexas.edu) and for the geo course (June 26-28) to Dr. Romy Hanna (romy@jsg.utexas.edu).
