Diamondiferous eclogite (3D recon)

(above) 3D reconstruction of a portion of a diamondiferous eclogite from Udachnaya, Yakutia. Matrix of partially altered clinopyroxene has been rendered transparent; large porphyroblasts of garnet are semi-transparent red; diamods are opaque blue, and alteration zones through the sample (along which the diamonds tend to align) are bright green. (below) Smaller portion of same sample, again with clinopyroxene rendered transparent, garnets translucent red-orange, diamonds opaque and blue, alteration zones green, and bright yellow orbs sulfides. Sample provided by Dr. Larry Taylor and Dr. Randy Keller, University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
