Garnet-kyanite schist (3D recon)

Photograph of a garnet-kyanite pelitic schist from Mica Dam, British Columbia. The sample consists of reddish-pink garnets and blue kyanite laths in fine-grained matrix of biotite and kyanite (dark areas) and fine-grained muscovite, quartz and feldspar (light areas). The light band on left is quartz vein. The sample is 12 cm high.

(Left) Pseudocolored 3D reconstruction from CT scans in which the garnets are pink, kyanite laths are blue, biotite-kyanite-rich regions are dark gray to black, and quartz-rich regions are light gray. (Right) Pseudocolored 3D reconstruction with a transparent matrix, leaving only the garnet porphyroblasts visible.
