Garnet-staurolite schist (3D recon)

(Top left) Pseudocolored 3D reconstruction of a garnet-staurolite schist from the Picuris Mountains, New Mexico. Garnets are orange-red while the staurolite crystals are yellow-green in a blue groundmass of fine-grained quartz, feldspar and biotite. Sample is 13 cm in long dimension. (Top right) Same image with groundmass rendered semi-transparent so as to view the distribution of the garnet and staurolite crystals within the scanned volume. (Bottom left) 3D subsampled section in which the garnets appear as yellow orbs and the staurolite crystals are yellow-green in a dark-blue groundmass. (Bottom right) Same image with groundmass rendered transparent and the staurolites rendered semi-transparent.
