Garnetiferous pelite (single scan)

Single 100 micron scan of a garnetiferous pelitic schist from Waterville, Maine. Garnets are brightest against a black-gray groundmass of quartz, feldspar and mica. As shown below, the euhedral crystal faces of the garnet were easily imaged. Sample provided by Dr. John Ferry, Johns Hopkins University.
